Outreach

From Nativity Into The World

Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son came not to be served but to serve: Bless all who, following in His steps, give themselves to the service of others; that with wisdom, patience and courage, they may minister in his Name to the suffering, the friendless, and the needy; for the love of him who laid down his life for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen (BCP:p260 - Collect for Social Service)

The church exists primarily for the benefit of those who are not its members. - Archbishop William Temple

Outreach Committee Meeting: The Outreach Committee meets the first Sunday of each month at 6:30 in the church library. This committee makes recommendations for the allocation of our increasingly growing outreach budget, and encourages the development of  "hands-on" outreach activity in our local community, our diocese and beyond. Contact Church Office: (334) 793-7616.

Good News Shop: Through its many volunteers, the Good News Shop, located on North Foster Street in downtown Dothan, collects secondhand clothing and other household items to sell at nominal prices to help the less fortunate. It also refers those in need to the appropriate specialized agencies in town. This group is always in need of donations and volunteers. Contact: Sarah Henderson - 334.792.8742.

Honduras Mission/Companion Relationship: Through Honduras Outreach, Inc., Nativity has begun a formal relationship with the village of Moreno. There are many levels of opportunity for involvement, including serving on the “Home Team” or “Go Team” of the planned mission trips. Contact Church Office: 334.793.7616.

Food Bank Brown Bag Program: Each month parishioners donate requested food and supplies. We donate these gifts to the Wiregrass Area Food Bank. We post the requests for each month in the Window and on the Events/News page of this web site. The drop-off box is in the Parish Hall. The next time you are at the grocery, pick up some extra items for the Food Bank and help needy individuals and families throughout the Wiregrass. The Wiregrass Area Food Bank is a United Way participating organization. Contact Church Office: 334.793.7616.

Aid to Inmate Mothers: Each month Nativity parishioners provide several children with transportation to Montgomery, Alabama to see their mothers who are in Tutwiler Prison. Volunteers drop the kids off for a few hours and then transport them back to Dothan. The mothers have to "earn" these visits with good behavior. The children and the mothers value these visits as the only "face-to-face" time they have. Please prayerfully consider this "moving ministry." The only duties volunteers have is to provide transportation. During the visit, volunteers are free to use this time exploring the Montgomery area. Contact Church Office: 334.793.7616.

Aid to Inmate Mothers (AIM) continues to preserve family relationships between incarcerated women and their children through monthly visitations at Julia Tutwiler Prison, and the Edwina Mitchell Work Release Center in Wetumpka, Alabama.  Incarcerated women are encouraged to become more involved and responsive to their children  through committed, active participation.  As research has shown, strong parental involvement in a child's life can prevent that child from losing confidence in his/her ability to succeed as a happy, healthy contributing member of society.  In addition to the monthly visits, AIM provides post-release services to female ex-offenders in order to help reduce recidivism rates. If you would like more information on AIM, double click the blue text above.

Parish Life

Daughters of the King: This is an international religious order of Episcopal women whose purpose is to bring others into a living, loving relationship with Jesus and to strengthen the spiritual life of the parish. After a three-month preparation period of study and prayer, Daughters take life-long vows of prayer and service that reaffirm the promises made at Baptism and Confirmation. Contact Church Office: 334.793.7616.

Confidential Prayers: A Service of the Daughters of the King
Sometimes in life, we have a problem or crisis that is intensely personal. We may feel in need of prayer but hesitate to ask because it is a problem that we do not wish to make public. The Daughters of the King observe confidentiality in our prayers. If the matter is extremely sensitive, it may be submitted to the Order as a prayer for John Doe or Mary Doe, with a general description of the problem.

If you have a prayer request, or if you would like more information on the Order, you may call or email Nonnie Teague at 794-7858, nonnie90t@aol.com or Michelle at (334) 393-3946,  mtbende@adelphia.net.  If you are emailing, please enter DOK as the subject.

Lay Weeders: A group of dedicated people who care for our beautiful Memorial Garden. We invite Parishioners to give memorial gifts to the garden as well as to care for its life. Contact Church Office: 334.793.7616.

Marvelous Feasts and Fasts: This is a wonderful opportunity for all adult members to meet monthly, on the fourth Tuesday, to share a meal and fellowship. Contact Church Office: (334)793-7616.

Baby Brigade: This group provides a series of meals and a supply of diapers to those in our parish celebrating the gift of new life. The group strives to take some of the pressure and anxiety out of those first weeks home through these basic baby needs. Contact Church Office: 334.793.7616.

Sonshine Committee: Teams, headed by captains, provide meals for parish families during times of sickness or bereavement. Contact Church Office: 334.793.7616.

The Sacraments

Baptism: Any person already baptized can be registered as a baptized member of our parish. We recognize as valid any baptism administered in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Baptisms are understood as communal events and therefore should be scheduled during the main worship Sunday service on the following feasts during the year: All Saints Day, The Baptism of our Lord, Easter Vigil and Pentecost. If you would like more information, please contact the clergy at 793-7616.

Marriages: Marriages are scheduled with the clergy. There are specific guidelines and expectations for marriages held at Nativity. A marriage customary describing details of ceremonies in the church are available in the church office. Contact Church Office: 334.793.7616.

Confirmation: Confirmation classes are taught every year. Classes are scheduled prior to the Bishop's annual visit and will be announced. Please make your desire to be confirmed known to the clergy. You can watch the Education page of this web site for scheduled Inquirers'/Confirmation classes. Contact Church Office: (334) 793-7616.

Burials: Burials are part of Christian life. As such, it is preferred that funerals take place at the church as opposed to funeral homes or gravesides. Please inform the clergy immediately of serious illnesses and deaths in the parish. Contact Church Office: (334) 793-7616.

Worship Support

Acolytes: Young people, after a period of training, serve and assist the clergy before, during and after each service at Nativity

Altar Guild: The work of the Guild is to prepare the sanctuary for all sacramental services and to care for the silver, brass and linens used in these services.

Chalice Bearers/Lay Readers: Following a training period and licensing process, parishioners administer the chalice, lead prayers and occasionally lead worship services.

Flower Guild: The Flower Guild is responsible for altar arrangements and for decorating the church on special occasions. The Flower Guild is part of the Altar Guild.

Lay Eucharistic Ministers: Lay Eucharistic Ministers are trained by the Rector and licensed by the Bishop to take communion directly from church services to ill and shut-in members of the parish.

Lectors: Members of the congregation read lessons and the Prayers of the People during worship.

Ushers: The Ushers serve to greet people, distribute bulletins, collect the offering, direct people during communion, straighten pews after services and generally to assist in the orderly conduct of worship.

Committees

Diocesan Convention Delegates: Nativity elects five lay members at the Annual Parish Meeting to serve as delegates to our Diocesan Convention.

Vestry: The Vestry is the governing body of congregations in the Episcopal Church. Nativity's Vestry is comprised of 15 members of the parish who serve a three year rotating term. Five members are elected at each Annual Parish Meeting. Membership on the Vestry requires a great deal of commitment and time.

Hospitality Committee: This committee serves the role of hosting many of the fellowship activities within our parish. Volunteers are always needed to serve when called upon.

Newcomer's/Greeters Committee: The word "Welcome" is defined as to greet and extend hospitality. Nativity's Newcomer Committee encourages all church members to join this committee. They act as greeters on Sunday morning and work with the clergy to welcome new members and visitors to become part of our parish and community.

Christian Education Committee: This committee oversees, plans and supports programs of the parish, including children, youth and adult Sunday School, Lenten Programs and special conferences or programs throughout the year. There is always a need for new ideas and creative enthusiasm.

Nursery Committee: The Nursery Committee serves to support and enhance our nursery services, through supporting our paid staff, maintaining the nursery and toddler rooms and periodically volunteering to sit.

Outreach Committee Meeting: The Outreach Committee meets the first Sunday of each month. This committee makes recommendations for the allocation of our increasingly growing outreach budget and encourages and develops "hands-on" outreach activity in our local community, our diocese and beyond.

Property Committee: This committee operates under the direction of the Junior Warden. The Property Committee oversees the church property, makes recommendations for improvements and repairs and occasionally convenes workdays. People are needed to serve on this committee and/or volunteer for work days.

Stewardship Committee: All Christians are called to contribute a portion of their time, talent and money toward the work of the church. Financial pledging is crucial to enable our parish to plan and foster our ministry to the community. Pledging also reflects our prayerful response to God's call to us to be good stewards of our material possessions. Every fall members of the parish are asked to make a pledge. Those joining the congregation during the year may make a pledge at any time by asking for a pledge card and returning it to the church office. Beyond its financial needs, Nativity's ministerial needs and opportunities are nearly limitless. You are invited to consider how you may give of your time to satisfy those ministerial needs.

Worship Committee: This committee meets monthly with the clergy and considers topics related to worship, plans services and looks for creative and effective ways to make our corporate worship more meaningful and provide an atmosphere for the integration of faith and life.
